Tracking the Critically Endangered Puerto Rican Amazon: A Motus Project

This YouTube video was produced by the American Bird Conservancy.

Preventing extinctions and reversing bird population declines are two key outcomes of ABC’s mission. Every acre matters for globally threatened birds, which often have small, restricted ranges and dwindling habitat.

Take the Puerto Rican Amazon (also known as Puerto Rican Parrot) for example, one of the rarest birds in the world — endemic to Puerto Rico, with fewer than 500 individuals remaining in the wild. Recovery efforts have focused on captive breeding and releasing these birds into three forests across the island, but new technology is helping fill in critical gaps in what we know about their movements.

Through a partnership between BirdsCaribbean, the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, and American Bird Conservancy, five additional Motus wildlife tracking towers have been installed across Puerto Rico. These solar-powered stations detect radio-tagged birds and automatically share data through the Motus network — reducing the need for time-intensive, hand-held tracking in the field.

The result? A clearer picture of how parrots use the landscape, which can directly inform critical conservation decisions. Efforts like this are part of a broader, ongoing push to stabilize and recover Endangered species — and are a priority of ABC’s bird conservation efforts every day of the year!
