Ancient Weapons: Sai

The sai is a weapon used for cutting and thrusting. The shape of the weapon is that of a metal prong with 2 curved side prongs that protrude from the handle. A Sai is traditionally blunt on its top. The sai is used in ninjutsu, and kobudo, but also in southern Chinese martial arts.

Sais are typically made of metal and are 37 to 50 centimeters(1’2.6” to 1’7.7”)  long and weigh between 1.5 to 2 kilograms(3.31 to 4.41 lbs.)..

History

The sai was created in the orient around the 17th century. There were earlier weapons used in several Asian countries that may have inspired the creation of the sai. The sai was once popular with Japanese police officers who used them for arresting criminals, and controlling unruly mobs.

Usage

Martial artists typically use sais in pairs, holding one in each hand. Sais are not just good weapons for thrusting; they can also be used for blocking assailants.
