Did you know that Gros Morne National Park is restoring its forests by planting more than one million native trees?
For years, forest ecosystems in the park were heavily impacted by moose overbrowsing. Moose, an introduced species in Newfoundland, caused significant damage to native vegetation. In response, Parks Canada launched a moose population reduction program in 2011, which has led to healthier forests across the park.
However, some areas—known as “moose meadows”—were so degraded that natural recovery was not possible. To restore these sites, Parks Canada began an ambitious forest restoration project. This includes:
Collecting native seeds
Growing tree seedlings
Planting trees in remote backcountry areasWatch how the Forest Health team is working to bring life back to Gros Morne’s ecosystems.
Learn how forest restoration is a powerful nature-based solution to climate change.
Be inspired to take action and discover how we can all help our ecosystems adapt and thrive.
