Little Penguin Chicks Experience Water for the First Time – Cincinnati Zoo

Our 2-month-old little blue penguin chicks got their first swimming lessons! Not surprisingly, they were naturals in the water. Penguin chicks have to wait until most of their first downy feathers fall out before they can swim because the downy feathers are not waterproof. The chicks will get daily sessions in the water to perfect their swimming skills. They will be introduced to the rest of our colony within the next few weeks and visitors will be able to see them in the new little blue penguin habitat when Roo Valley opens this summer.
