New Painted Dog Pups and Mom Exploring Their Habitat – Cincinnati Zoo

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

Ten African painted dog pups are now in Painted Dog Valley! The 5-month-old pups and their Mom arrived from the Endangered Wolf Center (EWC) in St. Louis, MO on May 11, 2019. Two of the females at the EWC gave birth to 23 pups within days of each other (in November 2018), and they didn’t want to share the male or space with the other litter. Typically the alpha male only breeds with the alpha female in a pack, but it didn’t work out that way this time. The EWC did not have space to manage two packs separately, so the Cincinnati Zoo agreed to give one pack a home. We have raised two large litters in Painted Dog Valley since it opened in 2014, so we have the expertise and an ideal habitat. The five adult dogs that occupied Painted Dog Valley prior to the arrival of the pups are being cared for at our off-site facility until the SSP makes a recommendation for relocation to other Zoos. Zoo Babies is presented by First Financial Bank.
