What does it mean exactly when a species or animal is reintroduced? What does it look like for an animal to be reintroduced back into the wild? Let us define it for you!
Transcript:
Reintroduction is simply a conservation tool. This is when wildlife biologists take animals from one area and put them into another for the purposes of recovering the species overall. Maybe this is historical habitat that they’re no longer found in due to elimination or other natural disasters. Maybe it’s new habitat that’s suitable for them today with the changing climate and changing landscape we have. Reintroduction is one of the most valuable restoration tools we have for wildlife conservation. And because of efforts like the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone 30 years ago, we’re now reintroducing wolves to Colorado today to hopefully spur some of that restoration effort in other areas. Defenders is plugged into reintroduction efforts nationwide from the reintroduction of wolves to Colorado, the reintroduction of wolverines to Colorado, grizzly bears in the North Cascades, or sea otters in California. Conservation is happening all around you, and don’t forget this valuable conservation tool. Learn more at defenders.org.
Defenders of Wildlife works on the ground, in the courts, and on Capitol Hill to protect and restore imperiled wildlife and habitats across North America.
