Ndume Exploring the Cincinnati Zoo’s Gorilla Habitat –

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden

Ndume is making steady progress in his new home. The first step in his introduction process was to get him used to his new suite of bedrooms, keepers, and shifting around in these areas. The next step, which started earlier this week, was to let him explore the expansive indoor habitat. He has looked around entire space and seems to be comfortable there. For now, the guest viewing windows are covered to give him some privacy. He can see silhouettes of people through the coverings, and eventually small holes will be cut so he can peep out. We’ll gradually make the holes bigger and ultimately remove the covering. Easing Ndume into exploring and transferring between the five different zones found in the “Gorilla World” facility (Indoor habitat, Outdoor habitat and the three large suites of bedroom/play areas) will be an ongoing, methodical process and will go at his pace. For now, during Ndume’s quarantine period, which is mandatory for all new animals, he has two of these five sections to himself. Once Ndume grows more familiar to the areas and routines and has completed his quarantine period, he will be able to begin visits with other gorillas. More on that down the road.
